Bridget Bishop
Bridget was an elderly woman the owned a tavern were citizens drank and enjoyed games, even on the Sabbath. The fact she promoted the consumption of alcohol and leisurely activities on the Holy Day was the main reason Bridget was easily believed to be a witch. A witness testified to Bishop's ability to shape-shift, which he watched her practice when she transformed her being into that of a cat. Confessed witches also swore she was one of them. Townsfolk testified to their belief that Bishop was responsible for bad luck they experienced and she was said to have forced part of a building to collapse with one glance. The lack of concrete evidence coinciding with the allowance of spectral evidence brought about the conviction of Bridget Bishop and the order for her execution. Bridget Bishop was hanged on Gallows Hill on June 10, 1692; the day the blood shed ensued.
